INTERTWINED: NEW PATHS

BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC FOR CELLO AND PIANO

Featuring original arrangements for cello and piano of Brazilian popular songs by Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque, Guinga, Milton Nascimento and Dori Caymmi, Brazilian pianist Júlia Tygel presents a delicate and expressive path intertwining classical and Brazilian popular music. The project was inaugurated with the release of her first CD, “Intertwined” (2011), produced by Benjamim Taubkin and with the participation of cellists Adriana Holtz (São Paulo State Orchestra – OSESP) and Vana Bock (São Paulo University Orchestra – OSUSP), plus special guests João Taubkin (acoustic bass) and Thais Nicodemo (piano – 4 hands).

The concerts following the CD’s release received great acclaim from both the general public and critics, and occurred in several theatres in Brazil, such as Museu da Casa Brasileira, SESC Vila Mariana, Sesc São José do Rio Preto, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Casa de Francisca, Casa do Núcleo, Espaço Dodecafônico de Jundiaí, Centro de Convivência Cultural de Campinas, turnê em teatros do SESI (Birigui, Sorocaba, Mogi das Cruzes, São José do Rio Preto e Santos). In 2012 this program was presented in New York at venues such as Cornelia Street Cafe, Barge Music, Brazilian Endowment for the Arts and Tenri Cultural Institute, with support from the Brazilian Consulate. In the US, Júlia performed with cellist Jody Redhage, a member of Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society.

Now Júlia resumes the project with a new cello and piano program featuring all-new and fresh compositions and arrangements, entitled “New Paths”. This new phase of the “Intertwined” project takes place after the conclusion of Julia’s PhD thesis at São Paulo University – with a period at City University of New York as a Fulbright grantee – time in which she was entirely dedicated to her academic pursuit. Her research focused on compositional processes inspired by traditional repertoires in the works of Villa-Lobos and Bartók, bringing new ideas and concepts to her own musical approach. The new program has recently been performed in Brazil at Santander Cultural, in Porto Alegre, and Museu do Estado in Recife.
